Some of our customers have wondered why Cedar Ideas specializes in outdoor products. The short answer lies within the natural properties of the Northern White Cedar we use to craft our outdoor accessories.
Cedar is one of nature’s miracles. Naturally resistant to insects and rot, cedar trees regenerate naturally in the forest without costly farming. Even when left unfinished and exposed to the elements, Northern White Cedar will last 15 to 20 years, even when in contact with the ground. In the harsh environment of Maine, fences using cedar posts has been known to last for decades. Cedar is not prone to splintering, and if unfinished will age to a silvery grey color with a silky surface that is smooth to the touch. Unlike some treated woods, cedar needs no additional treatments with formaldehyde or other toxic chemicals to maintain its beauty and structure. Cedar is safe for children and pets.
Northern White Cedar is a common tree in Northern Maine and our cedar logs come from abundant forests within 100 miles of our mills. It is free of pitch and resin, which characterize pine species, and can be troublesome for outdoor furniture. Cedar does not require kiln curing to kill insects, like pine does, though we sometimes use a finishing kiln depending on the time of year.
Cedar also has a unique cellular structure that makes it lightweight and strong. The cells of cedar have tiny pockets of air that provide additional insulation qualities making it a fine material for log homes. For outdoor furniture and accessories, this cellular structure translates into lightweight, but durable, products.
We invite you to experience the beauty and durability of Cedar Ideas in your own home!
